Hi there—I’m glad you found your way here! I’m Julie, a writer drawn to the places where ideas meet lived experience. I’m also an editor and researcher with a PhD in English and Cultural Studies from McMaster University. These days, my work centres on telling research-driven stories that explore the intersections of arts and culture, spirituality, and social justice.

I’ve worn a few hats along the way—postdoctoral fellow, professor of postcolonial literature, associate editor at Broadview magazine—and I now focus on long-form journalism, essays, and book reviews. What connects all of it is a love of language and a commitment to thoughtful, grounded storytelling rooted in curiosity, care, and an ethic of responsibility.

My writing blends journalistic curiosity with scholarly depth. Whether I’m crafting reported features or essays, I’m drawn to questions that don’t have easy answers—and to the human voices at the heart of them. I believe that language, when shaped with care, can open minds, deepen empathy, and help us make sense of complexity.

I call the rural village of Elora, Ontario, home, where my ideal day is spent writing and wandering its trails. That breathtaking image on my homepage? It’s Skellig Michael—a rugged, otherworldly island off Ireland’s Atlantic coast that once sheltered monks seeking solitude and spiritual clarity. Its stark beauty reminds me that we’re all just clinging to this rock, trying to live gently, seek truth, and make a life that matters before the tide comes in.
